Watch This Republican Prove He Doesn't Care About Poor Americans

Asked how Republicans plan to make life more affordable, Congressman Troy Nehls said he was going to buy himself "a couple of big lobster tails" and "some nice rib-eyes" for the Fourth of July. When pressed about the 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, he said maybe they "don't work as hard as I do."

Here's what he left off the menu: Nehls voted for H.R. 1, the bill that cut $186 billion from SNAP — the largest cut to food assistance in the program's history. 3.5 million Americans have already lost benefits. One of them, Presley Nassise, works two jobs and was recertified at $50 a month.

The money didn't vanish. It moved — off a grocery card, toward people who were never going to notice. And Nehls represents suburban Houston, full of the exact families this bill hit. The midterms are coming, and they tend to remember.
