8:32Now PlayingThe third-richest man on earth, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, sold off his New York City real estate one month after Zohran Mamdani won on a rent freeze — and the right wants you to believe socialism scared him out of town.
It didn't. The properties in question were struggling long before.
But now working class New Yorkers are getting some help.
On June 25, 2026, New York's Rent Guidelines Board voted 7-1 for a full rent freeze — zero percent, the first two-year freeze in board history — on roughly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments, effective October 1. Hours before the vote, a landlord representative resigned in protest.
The billionaires didn't flee because a rent freeze made the money leave. They ran from a sinking asset — and the tenants won anyway.
