It’s not particularly surprising when someone unfamiliar with the wilderness gets lost in it. Newcomers are commonly led astray by false paths, unprepared for weather conditions, and in many cases overconfident in their abilities. Mark Hanson, for example, ended up off trail in gear that wasn’t appropriate for the temperatures after refusing to stop when it would have been wiser to do so. What’s a little harder to comprehend is when someone trained to understand the outdoors disappears, such as a boy scout.
