But as so often happens, this paradise wasn’t without its dangers. Viking sagas tell of battles with violent inhabitants called Skraelings, as well as seas filled with ship devouring worms somewhere between the New World and the Old. For some reason, a people for whom traveling to new worlds by the ocean tides was a way of life, a people who scratched a living out of rocks and snow as frequently as soil and sand, failed to conquer them.
