It was the first of December, 1946, and it seemed that the combined effects of the cold Vermont air as well as the winter’s early sunsets were getting to the 18 year old Bennington College sophomore; and the stress of looming finals wasn’t helping either. Explaining that some fresh air and exercise might help to alleviate her mild melancholy, Paula told Elizabeth at lunch that a quick hike might be just the thing to help her focus on her studies later that Sunday evening; something that was not uncharacteristic of the botany-enthused art major. With that, she buttoned her red parka, and laced up her thick soled sneakers, and headed out of her Dewey Hall dorm room and into the chilly New England afternoon. She would never be seen again.
