If there is one piece of literature that has affected my interest in the paranormal, the preternatural, or the general unknown more than any other, it is the unabridged version of the story Genetic Memory. That's not because it's the best written or most descriptive horror story of all time. It doesn’t make you think to check every shadow the way many stories about ghosts, demons, or other supernatural evils do. It doesn’t make you jump every time a stair creaks or something knocks inside of a wall. No, the reason this story has been so present in my mind for the last fifteen-odd years is because it asks a question that cuts to the one of the core aspects of our humanity - the strange phenomenon of passing the psychological effects of our experiences from generation to generation through the most basic building block of what we are, that being our DNA.
