One balmy November afternoon, in a California seaside town, Steve Mathieu got a call from a friend who was a little bit confused. See, the caller had just spotted their mutual friend’s truck, a 1967 Chevy utility bed pickup, sitting on the side of Highway 1 with its hood propped open. However, the truck’s owner and their friend, Hugh Harlin, was nowhere to be found. The men drove 20 miles north to where the truck was parked, only to discover that Harlin’s glasses, tobacco, weed, lunch, and borrowed tools had all been left behind. Fearing the worst, the men contacted police, and the search for Hugh Harlin was on. But this was not the first tragedy to strike the little town of Morro Bay, or even the Harlins. Four years earlier, Dian Harlin, Hugh’s wife, had been murdered: strangled with a dog leash and left in a grove of trees near Morro Bay High School, a place she was often seen walking her beloved dogs. Police had initially suspected Hugh, because it’s common for law enforcement to look at the spouse first in homicide cases, but Hugh was never charged. To this day, Dian Harlin’s murder remains unsolved, and Hugh Harlin is still missing. I’m Aidan Mattis, and welcome back to The Lore Lodge…
