When Michigan voters head to the polls for the primaries, they will see Donald Trump on the ballot. Tuesday, a Michigan judge rejected arguments that Trump’s role in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol meant the court had to declare him unable to run for president. The judge passed the buck to lawmakers saying it should be up to Congress to decide whether Trump is disqualified under the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment. The judge maintained that if he ruled Trump ineligible,”it would strip Congress of its ability to ‘by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such a disability.”

Today, President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping are expected to meet in San Francisco. Just hours before the scheduled meeting at the APEC Summit, the U.S. and China pledged to work together to fight global warming. The two countries declaring the climate crisis “one of the greatest challenges of our time”.

The House on Tuesday approved a novel plan to prevent a government shutdown, with the recently installed Republican House speaker Mike Johnson relying on Democratic votes as the far-right flank of his caucus dissented.

Crises averted, for now. Mainstream Republicans and just about every Democratic representative voted together in favor of a stopgap spending package that will avoid a government shutdown until at least early in 2024. The vote was 336 to 95, more than the two-thirds needed for passage.

We welcome John Rothmann to weigh in on that and more.

Author Jon Clinch will stop in to talk about his new book just released yesterday. The General and Julia follows the life of Ulysses S. Grant and his family. Clinch looks at what leaders today could learn from Grant.
