Eileen Wang — an elected United States official — was receiving pre-written scripts from PRC officials via WeChat, posting Chinese government propaganda on a website called US News Center (presented as local community news), sending engagement numbers back to Beijing, and making edits on their request. Her sign-off to a PRC official after completing the work? "Thank you, leader."
The Department of Justice charged her with one count of acting as an illegal foreign agent of the People's Republic of China. The maximum sentence is 10 years. Her ex-fiancé Mike Sun is already serving 4 years after pleading guilty to the same charge in October 2025. They were part of a larger WeChat group coordinating with multiple other individuals running similar fake community news sites — all pushing PRC messaging, denying the Xinjiang genocide, and spreading Chinese government propaganda to American audiences.
This should be national news. An elected American official, secretly working at the direction of the Chinese government, calling a PRC official "leader" — and it's barely being covered. Chinese influence operations in the United States are real, they are ongoing, and this case makes clear they reach directly into elected office. The question isn't just about Eileen Wang. It's about how many more.
