In this first episode of the Ibn Taymiyya Files, we look more closely at the views of the great Sunni scholar on the subject of al-Tasarruf fi-l-Kawn, or "Exercising Control of the Universe." We discuss his most important writings on this topic, his proofs from the Quran, Sunna, and reports from the Salaf. We also situate his views in context of wider Sunni scholarly discourse.
This episode also traces the evolution of Muslim views on the concept of al-Tasarruf, specifically post-colonialism. Due to the influence of modernism and materialism, some Muslim thinkers downplayed or denied the concept of awliya (saints) exercising supernatural powers. These modernist trends impacted the Wahhabi movement, which deemed the belief in al-Tasarruf as shirk akbar (major shirk).
In the final part of the episode, we compare the views of modern Wahhabi figures like Bin Baz with the views of Ibn Taymiyya to show that, a consistent Wahhabi view would render Ibn Taymiyya as an apologist for and promoter of shirk.
