Major credit card companies will begin coding gun sales - Fact Check Team

There is now a new code credit card companies can use to categorize sales from gun and ammunition stores.

The National Desk’s Fact Check Team has spent the night looking into this new code and how it impacts you.

The International Standards Organization is behind the change. They’re a group of experts who collaborate and create international standards for a slew of things like credit card companies.

They just approved a new merchant category code (MCC) for gun and ammunition retailers.

The change came after Amalgamated Bank and a coalition of national gun violence prevention groups initially petitioned for the code. They use reports of mass shooting suspects using credit cards for weapons as a main reason for the code.

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. and Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Penn., supported their efforts and sent letters to Visa, American Express and Mastercard to get on board.
