Former President Donald Trump could face charges because of the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation into his alleged use of campaign funds to pay $130,000 of hush money to Stormy Daniels. Tonight, the National Desk's Fact Check Team is taking a closer look at the case.

Investigations have been ongoing for some time but much of this began in 2018 when Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to eight charges including campaign finance violations in connection to the payment made to Stormy Daniels. During his guilty plea, Cohen claimed he was directed to pay the hush money and was reimbursed for it by an “unnamed candidate.” By July 2019, the federal investigation into the payments was concluded, however, the court order didn’t state precisely why the case was closed.

One month later, then-Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance subpoenaed the Trump Organization for records related to the Stormy Daniels payments. There was also another subpoena issued that summer for Trump's tax returns dating back to 2011. Trump sued to block those requests but in 2021 the Supreme Court ruled against his request, which opened the door for the Manhattan DA to have access to them.
