'Afraid': Ex-Chicago police leader criticizes Dems for rejecting federal crime aid

During Labor Day weekend, at least 54 people were shot in Chicago, with seven people killed.

Residents and the Chicago Police Department welcome any federal law enforcement. But Democratic leaders -- including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson -- continue to refuse help and have even ordered city police to not work with ICE on any operations.

Jody Weis, who is the former head of the Chicago Police Department, said the work that’s being done in D.C. is the blueprint of how federal authorities can work with federal authorities. He said he finds it “absurd” that Pritzker and Johnson are opposed to getting help from federal authorities.

"If you don’t want the fed help, then you must be happy with the numbers you have in crime. And we all know the only acceptable number for murder would be zero," Weis told The National News Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview Tuesday.

"I think they are afraid that people will see what can be done if politicians commit to taking action and really want to make a difference,” Weis said of Pritzker and Johnson. “That’s really the only reason I can think of because otherwise, it makes no sense. And if you look at what Mayor Muriel Bowser has done in D.C. -- she’s embraced it and it’s made a huge difference. I wish they would learn from her.”
