Supreme Court Justice addresses political violence, including Kirk assassination

The Honorable Amy Coney Barrett, who is an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, visited the University of Notre Dame on Friday to participate in a in a moderated conversation.

In the wake of recent shootings, including the tragedy at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minnesota, the shooting at at Evergreen High School in Denver, along with the shocking assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, she started the event by speaking about the importance of learning to have disagreements in "a civil and collegial way.”

"I think that too often when I look around the country -- I mean, political violence is the most grotesque symptom of it -- but there are others, too, just in online conversations and the way that people treat those with whom they disagree," Barrett told event monitor Vincent Phillip Muñoz, who is the director of Notre Dame’s Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Government.

"And that’s actually one of the points that I tried to make in the book. It’s just not a way to run a society," she added. "And I think that you at Notre Dame, especially you students, can model a different way to be."
