Senate gridlock leaves government unfunded, sparking blame game over shutdown

The federal government officially shut down at midnight after lawmakers failed to reach a deal and missed the deadline for funding the government. Neither side shows any signs of budging.

Democrats rejected a GOP continuing resolution that would have kept the government open past midnight on Oct. 1. The Senate stand adjourned until Wednesday at 10 a.m.
