Republicans push SAVE Act ahead of 2026 midterms as Democrats cry voter suppression

Republicans in Congress are reviving a federal bill known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act.

The proposal would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship — such as a passport or birth certificate — to register to vote in federal elections, along with a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot. Democrats have criticized the measure, arguing it could restrict access to voting.
