Nuclear DEAL or military STRIKE? U.S.–Iran tensions remain amid Geneva talks

A third round of indirect nuclear talks between the United States and Iran has wrapped up in Geneva, with both sides agreeing to meet again next week — even as military forces remain on standby.

Oman’s foreign minister, mediating the negotiations, says there has been “significant progress,” with technical-level discussions set to continue in Vienna. The U.S. is pushing to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, while Iran is demanding relief from economic sanctions.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff warned earlier this week that Iran may be just “a week away” from obtaining industrial-grade bomb-making material. President Trump has suggested a decision on whether to stick with diplomacy or pursue military action could come within days.

But even if a deal is reached limiting Iran’s nuclear program, tensions may remain. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Iran refuses to negotiate over its ballistic missile program — a key concern for the White House. Iran denies developing missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Meanwhile, top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee Mark Warner says Congress needs clarity on the president’s ultimate goal — whether it’s containing nuclear capabilities, regime change, or broader regional strategy. Warner also argues any military strike would require justification to lawmakers and the American public.

Should talks continue, the United Nations’ nuclear oversight body is expected to become directly involved in the negotiations.

With diplomacy advancing but the threat of conflict still looming, the stakes remain high.
