Formula makers are fighting state laws to police heavy metals, as feds promise action

It took a bombshell investigation, multiple national reports, and a lot of fortitude, but Maryland passed a major law to help protect babies from toxic heavy metals, lead, arsenic and cadmium, in their food. The law required testing and disclosure of the results. It's been copied in Illinois, and Virginia.

Maryland Delegate Deni Taveras drove the legislation to the finish line in 2024.

This session, she wanted to enhance the law with a new bill to include testing and disclosure of heavy metals in infant formula, in light of recent tests that found them and other toxic chemicals in half of formulas tested.

That's where she hit a roadblock.
