Modern vehicles are packed with technology designed to keep drivers safe — lane assist, crash warnings, automatic braking and even systems capable of partially driving the car themselves.

Yet thousands of pedestrians and cyclists continue to die on American roads every year in crashes many safety advocates believe are preventable.

Now, one family’s tragedy is at the center of a growing national fight over whether automakers should be required to make cars better at recognizing the people outside the vehicle — not just the ones inside it.
