20:26Now PlayingNASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says the agency is moving aggressively toward returning Americans to the moon — with a revamped Artemis roadmap designed to avoid the long delays and technical setbacks that plagued earlier missions.
In an interview following the successful splashdown of Artemis II astronauts, Isaacman described the crew’s safe return to Earth as the mission’s most tense moment.
“When you come back, there’s no Plan B,” Isaacman said, noting that reentry from lunar distances leaves little room for error. “When they were under parachute in the water, it was a huge sense of relief across the agency.”
The Artemis II mission marked NASA’s first crewed lunar mission in decades, sending astronauts around the moon before safely returning them to Earth. Isaacman said the mission provided critical lessons for the next phase of lunar exploration, particularly involving the Orion spacecraft’s life support systems and operational procedures.
NASA is now shifting focus to Artemis III, currently targeted for mid-2027. Unlike earlier plans that envisioned Artemis III landing astronauts directly on the moon, the mission will now test lunar landers and docking systems in Earth orbit first — mirroring the step-by-step approach used during the Apollo era.
“This is exactly how we did it in the 1960s,” Isaacman explained. “If you're going to learn something there, you'd rather learn it when you're really close to home on Earth, where you can be back in the water in hours instead of, learn that problematic lesson when you're four days away, on the moon.”
Artemis III is expected to involve launches from multiple commercial partners, including SpaceX and Blue Origin, alongside NASA’s Space Launch System rocket. Isaacman called the planned sequence of launches “the most impressive heavy rocket launch week in human history.”
