as posted by the channelOn Memorial Day, Americans honor the service members who gave their lives serving the country. Across the nation, flags are lowered, ceremonies are held, and families remember loved ones who never came home.
But the holiday is also a reminder of the lasting impact war has on those who survive it.
As the U.S. remains militarily engaged in the conflict involving Iran, the sacrifices of American troops feel especially immediate. Beyond the battlefield, many veterans face years of challenges adjusting to civilian life — from mental health struggles to housing insecurity and navigating veterans' benefits.
For many veterans, returning home can be one of the most difficult transitions of their lives.
One of the biggest issues is mental health, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 7% of veterans experience PTSD at some point in their lives, though rates are often higher among combat veterans and women veterans.
PTSD symptoms can include flashbacks, severe anxiety, insomnia, depression, emotional numbness, and hypervigilance. Many veterans also cope with traumatic brain injuries sustained during combat or training.
Advocates say one of the most difficult parts of military transition is leaving behind the structure, identity, and camaraderie of service life.
Veterans often must adjust to:
Finding civilian employment
Accessing healthcare through the VA
Returning to school
Rebuilding relationships with family and friends
Managing physical or psychological injuries
The labor market for veterans has improved in recent years. According to the Department of Labor, veteran unemployment remains relatively low nationally, at 3.7% in April.
Still, experts say employment statistics do not fully capture the difficulties many veterans experience when transitioning into civilian careers that match their military skills and experience.
