Nearly 1/4 of Americans think Trump assassination attempts STAGED; political extremism a new normal?

A man accused of attempting to assassinate President Trump at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner pleaded not guilty Monday, as new polling suggests a growing share of Americans believe recent political violence targeting the president was staged.

Federal prosecutors say Cole Allen attempted to kill President Trump and other top officials during the annual Washington event earlier this year. Allen appeared in court on Monday and entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him.

The case comes as conspiracy theories surrounding attacks on President Trump continue spreading online.

A new survey conducted by NewsGuard and YouGov found nearly one-quarter of Americans believe the assassination attempts at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and in Butler, Pennsylvania, were staged. The poll also revealed a sharp partisan divide.

According to the survey, 34% of Democrats believe the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attack was a planned stunt, while 42% believe the Butler, Pennsylvania, attempt was staged.
