Sajid Javid resigned as Health Secretary yesterday, 5 July 2022, in a dramatic blow for the Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In a personal statement to the House of Commons, Javid attacked the leadership of Boris Johnson saying the problems in the Conservative party "start at the top"
Javid said his resignation was a matter of integrity. Citing multiple times he had supported Boris Johnson in the media he claimed he had given the Prime Minister the "benefit of the doubt" - but that he could no longer continue to do so.
Sajid Javid's speech directly after PMQs comes amid a flurry of ministerial resignations - including that of former Chancellor Rishi Sunak - as previously loyal MPs have begun to publicly declare their lack of confidence in Boris Johnson to lead the Conservative party and the country.
This latest round of resignations and declarations of no confidence follow revelations that the Boris Johnson knew about the specific allegations against Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher at the time he was appointed, despite sending MPs out to media rounds just days ago claiming the PM was unaware of the allegations.
