Jonn Elledge, the author of a new book, Conspiracy: A History of Boll*cks Theories and How Not To Fall For Them, speaks to Rachel Cunliffe about how conspiracy theories are nothing new, which explores the history of conspiracy from "ancient Rome, to the assassination of JFK, to Britney Spears, to Covid to Donald Trump."
Elledge points out the international nature of conspiracy theories in politics, acknowledging Boris Johnson's "deep state" quote and the similarities to Donald Trump and his rhetoric around the election which he has repeatedly claimed was "stolen" - Qanon is "particularly terrifying" due to its scale, as if it was the "birth of a new religion" - Jonn Elledge.
"It's not just a Western thing" however, pointing out the increase in conspiratorial thinking across global politics, including "Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, or Narendra Modi in India."
