In this episode, Armando Iannucci and Anoosh Chakelian examine whether Britain is falling apart at the seams. In 2010 the Conservative Party came into power under the slogan “We can’t go on like this” and promising to fix “Broken Britain”. Today, with unions around the country striking, the NHS buckling, and communities increasingly stepping in to provide vital services after 37% cuts to local councils since 2010 – we ask, can the country still go on like this.
Special guests for the episode Michelle Dornelly, founder of Children with Voices, which has run Hackney Community Food Hub since 2020, and Emilie De Bruijn who set up Hartlepool Baby Bank in 2019.
Michelle Donrelly argues that as inflation continues to rise, it is “not just the elderly suffering heat or eat, it’s all of us.”
Boris Johnson won his 2019 majority with the pledge to “level up” the parts of Britain that had been forgotten. However, Emile De Bruijin sees little evidence of this, claiming that her local area with over 100,00 residents had “didn't even exist” on government funding maps.
