Labour Party candidate Samantha Dixon has won the Chester by-election. Recorded prior to the result, the New Statesman’s polling expert Ben Walker, a Chester native, set the stage for the Chester by-election. The election was held on the 1st of December 2022 and was Rishi Sunak’s first electoral test as Prime Minister, and is potentially a marker for how his government is being received by the public.
Chester is traditionally a “swing seat” however, in 2019, it “went against the grain” of the UK by voting for Labour, argues Ben Walker.
Whilst this election is likely to be a failed test for Sunak, it could also represent a model for success for Labour leader Keir Starmer. The Labour candidate in Chester, Samantha Dixon, argues that “Labour values appeal to local people” in the area. This combination of local issues and “targeted” campaigning has been effective in getting the local community to “trust them.”
In this video, Ben Walker spoke to the now MP Samantha Dixon and several Chester voters to set the stage for Rishi Sunak’s first electoral test and a potential model for Keir Starmer going forward to a general election.
