Read Phil Whitaker's article
Phil Whitaker is medical editor for the New Statesman, and a practicing GP. In this video he speaks to Rachel Cunliffe about how policy decisions and money-saving efforts have led to a breakdown of the health system, and offers his prescription to save it - which includes inviting Health Secretary Steve Barclay and the shadow health secretary Wes Streeting to spend time on the front line with GPs.
Whitaker discusses the historial decisions that have led to today's crisis - including David Cameron and George Osborne's austerity project. This, Whitaker argues, led to “the very bits of the health service and social care that needed to be invested in” being cut - “nobody was managing that situation.”
He says that He also explains why he believes the UK, once the envy of the world in terms of healthcare, should ""be humble"" and learn from other countries - in particular Norway - to create a health service that works for today's society.
