Recent figures from the Environment Agency found that raw sewage was dumped in UK water 800 times a day in 2022. This has “a profound effect” on fishing businesses around the UK, argues New Statesman associate business editor Emma Haslett. We visited Whitstable harbour to meet Graham West, who is an oyster seller to talk about how that's affected his business.
“Southern Water the local supplier was handed a record 90 million pound fine in 2021 after it was found that between 2010 and 2015 pollution it had dumped caused a long-term deterioration in the quality of shellfish, states Emma Haslett, arguing that the fishing industry feels like it has been “ignored and forgotten”.
West argues that the UK fishing industry is facing a “perfect storm”, of rising energy costs, the rising price of diesel and declining confidence from the public in the UK fishing industry.
