Liz Truss’ short premiership saw the introduction and fall-out of the disastrous mini-budget. The Labour party took this as an opportunity to become the party of fiscal responsibility. But, as Freddie Hayward and Anoosh Chakelian argue, perhaps Labour took their criticisms of the Tories “too far”.

By demonising Truss’ decision to borrow for tax cuts, and failing to distinguish the difference, Labour now finds itself in the difficult position of not being able to borrow to invest, at the risk of hypocrisy.
