Racist riots in the wake of the horrific Southport stabbings were fuelled by misinformation on social media.

As Southport grieved in shock following the brutal murders of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, misinformation about the alleged killer's identity flourished online.
Far-right rioters took to the streets shouting "we want our country back" and throwing bricks at a local mosque - provoked, it seems, by false statements on social media claiming the killer was a small boats migrant with a Muslim-sounding name.
Now the judge in the trial of the 17 year old suspect has named the boy as Axel Rudakubana, in an attempt to quell unrest.
