As parliament debates the assisted dying bill, the New Statesman's Kate Lamble meets two of Britain's most senior palliative care professors to understand whether the UK health service could cope with the proposed new law.
They explain how severe underfunding of end-of-life care means dying people are more likely to suffer, and discuss the changes that would need to happen to make the NHS ready to help people die.
Katherine Sleeman is professor of palliative care at King's College London.
Nancy Preston is professor of supportive and palliative care and Lancaster University.
