Stilman rose to prominence in the 90s with his so-called "doomed, bourgeois, in love trilogy", starting with his debut film "Metropolitan" in 1990.
The films are comedies of manners, in the tradition of Jane Austen, set among America's preppy class.
The writer and director talks to the New Statesman's culture editor Tanjil Rashiid.
