Andy Burnham on Saturday submitted his application to run as the Labour candidate in the forthcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.
Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has made no secret of his desire to become an MP and challenge Starmer's leadership.
Soft Left colleagues in the Labour Party had hoped the upcoming by-election could have been the start of that process.
But Labour's National Executive Committee – who select candidates for elections – rejected Burnham's bid after the Prime Minister had attended in person to argue against it.
Anoosh Chakelian and Ailbhe Rea discuss Andy Burnham's bid, the response from Keir Starmer and the NEC, and what this means for the future of the Labour party.
