Voting, one of our most basic and sacred civic functions, has been reduced to popularity contests, skin color, gender, sexual preference, or other identities that the modern political machine has created. We no longer look for capable, principled leaders who can fix problems and govern responsibility for the communities that they serve. The Los Angeles mayoral election will be an indicator if we still have any shred of common sense left in that once great city.
