This short is taken from the FULL LENGTH Police Body Camera Video showing what led up to this terribly misguided "Use of Force" incident that Henry County, Indiana's "new & inexperienced" Elected Sheriff John M. Sproles was involved with, inside his jail on Thursday, July 6th, 2023.
Correctional Officers (CO's) in the jail were attempting to get inmate, Marquette Antoine Neal, to follow the jail policy & their orders. Inmate Neal had other ideas apparently and he was determined to give the CO's a bit of grief during that encounter. It wasn't long before the Assistant Jail Commander & the "Noobie" Sheriff were also involved. They all, now, claim they have had multiple behavioral issues with inmate Neal.
Inmate Neal was told to return to his cell and "lockdown", but he refused! At that point, it was determined that they would move him to a new cell, in booking, where he could be monitored a bit more. He DID comply with the request to move and he did so without any trouble, actually walking there without being handcuffed or touched in anyway!
In the new cell, inmate Neal was by himself. But at that time, he began to "mule kick" the steel, cell door. Now, while this might have been a minor noise annoyance, this in NO WAY caused damage to the jail cell door, no one else was in danger and the inmate was not in danger of "hurting himself." However, at that time, multiple CO's & road Deputies, along with the Assistant Jail Commander & the Sheriff arrived outside the cell door to attempt to deal with this issue!
Sheriff Sproles was wearing dress clothes (not his uniform), a "SWAT" or "RIOT" helmet & gloves... he was also carrying an orange and black "LESS LETHAL" shot gun. It is designed to shoot 12 gauge bean bag rounds.
The Sheriff can be seen smiling and laughing during this very tense and nerve-racking time. The Sheriff looked around and was smiling from ear to ear. He appeared to be having a wonderful time! He seemed to be laughing and smiling before he crouched and began to fire... his behavior was VERY strange!
THIS SHORT SHOWS THE SHERIFF FIRE 2 ROUNDS OF 12 GAUGE, "LESS LETHAL" BEANBAGS... THROUGH AN OPENING IN THE CELL DOOR, AT NEARLY POINT BLANK RANGE, INTO THE LEGS OF THE INMATE. THE ROUNDS IN THE SHORT ARE ACTUALLY THE 3RD & 4TH ROUNDS FIRED, OUT OF 4 TOTAL ROUNDS. (THERE WERE TWO ROUNDS FIRED BEFORE THE SHORT STARTS). BECAUSE OF THE 4 ROUNDS FIRED, AT POINT BLANK RANGE, THE INMATE HAD DEEP, WOUNDS, THAT BLED PROFUSELY AND HE NEEDED TO BE TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL, WHERE HE REQUIRED TREATMENT & MANY STITCHES!
The Sheriff's actions, attitude, behavior & judgement was all very questionable during the encounter! This has caused a big uproar locally in the community, and it has been said the feds are investigating... but the news has not picked this story up & neither has anyone else. Host Kristopher H. Bilbrey from here at 'The Political Spotlight' broke this story and has been covering this and several other issues with THIS sheriff, in Henry County! But the story needs to get out there... and MORE PEOPLE need to see it & be pissed off & outraged!
