During a Campaign Rally for former President Donald Trump on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old man called Thomas M. Crooks climbed onto the roof of a building approximately 400 - 500 feet (120 to 150 meters) away from Trump and just outside of the security perimeter.
While Trump was addressing the crowd, Crooks began firing several shots, which could immediately be heard. Before he ducked down, Trump appeared to touch or rub his head, and the Secret Service scrambled to cover him entirely.
People in the crowd looked around while ducking and screaming, but the cameras stayed trained on the scene. Within seconds, more law enforcement converged on the area; several were in SWAT gear. The Secret Service could be heard making plans to move the former President. At one point, one of the Special Agents can be heard saying, "SHOOTER IS DOWN," which is surprising how quickly it all happened, but it made sense because it did seem as if there were the first round of shots fired, then a quick pause with then a few more fired, but they sounded just a bit different.
The Secret Service Special Agents picked Trump up, who looked disheveled and appeared to be bleeding from his ear or head! The former President could be heard saying, "Let me get my shoes," before thrusting his fist in the air and appearing to chant, "FIGHT! FIGHT!" At that point, the crowd erupted in cheers, and the Secret Service took Trump to an SUV, and he was driven away!
Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told reporters soon after that the suspected shooter was dead... as was one citizen who was a bystander, peacefully watching the rally! Two other bystanders were in critical condition!
Trump's spokesperson said Trump was being checked out by a medical team at an area Hospital but was fine!
President Joe Biden, in a statement, said, “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
Former President George W. Bush said, in a statement, "Laura and I are grateful that President Trump is safe following the cowardly attack on his life. And we commend the men and women of the Secret Service for their speedy response."
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed in a post on X that he was also briefed on the attack. He went on to say, "This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned."
The FBI is working the investigation as an Assassination Attempt on President Donald Trump's life. The investigation is still really early, and more information will be provided as the story develops!
