During the meeting, the Council discussed Ordinance #37-24 (An Ordinance establishing a "Code of Ethics" for the City of Muncie).
The City has a long history of serious corruption, dating back 60+ years, all of which led to an 8+ years-long FBI investigation, which resulted in several arrests and federal prosecutions of the Mayor and other city officials and local politicians.
In 2019, several new "outsiders" ran as both Republicans and Democrats and the Republican candidate for Mayor, Dan Ridenour, promised many fundamental changes to how local government was run.
Amazingly, Ridenour won, and as of the recording of this short (12.02.24), he is a year into his second term, and things haven't changed!
In 2023, the then-city council pushed for an advisory committee to examine ethics in city government! After 18 months, the committee moved forward with Ordinance #37-24 (An Ordinance establishing a "Code of Ethics" for the City of Muncie).
While the citizens of Muncie were extremely happy with this, many Republicans who in 2019 promised a "push for ethics and better government" now tried to slow down the " Code of Ethics," with some going as far as saying it was not needed!
During the meeting on Monday, December 02, 2024, former City Councilor Jeff Robinson (D) (2020-2023) addressed the current City Councilors about voting for Ordinance #37-24. This is the end of his comments to the Council!
Ordinance #37-24 did finally pass 9-0!
