Kaepernick donates $50K to Meals on Wheels. While he waits for an offer in NFL free agency, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has donated $50,000 to Meals on Wheels. The group, which has been in the news recently as it faces a potential funding cut under President Donald Trump's proposed budget, confirmed the donation in tweet on Tuesday. News of Kaepernick's donation came a day after Trump took credit for the free agent quarterback's lack of suitors during a rally in Louisville, Kentucky. "It was reported that NFL owners don't want to pick him up because they don't want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump," he said. "Do you believe that? I just saw that. I just saw that." Kaepernick opted out of his contract earlier this month in the wake of a season that saw him receive attention for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality. While the protest spread to other athletes and other sports in a gesture of solidarity, others, including Trump, criticized Kaepernick as unpatriotic and disrespectful to military service members and the American flag. Last week, one AFC general manager told Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman that one reason Colin Kaepernick remained unsigned was because “[S]ome teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or [President Donald] Trump will tweet about the team.” Kaepernick, you may remember, began the 2016 season by taking a knee during the national anthem. It was how he chose to protest social inequality. It was also a controversial decision, one that transcended the sports world. Which brings us back to Trump, who brought up Kaepernick’s name during a rally Monday night in Louisville, Kentucky. “And you know, your San Francisco quarterback,” Trump said, via TMZ (by way of PFT). “I’m sure nobody ever heard of him. I’m just reporting the news. There was an article today — I love to report the news and then they said I made a mistake, right? I said, ‘No, the people reporting the news made a mistake if it’s wrong.’ But there was an article today, it was reported that NFL owners don’t want to pick him up because they don’t want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump. Do you believe that? I just saw that. I just saw that. I said if I remember that one I’m gonna report it to the people of the Kentucky. Because they like it when people actually stand for the American flag.” Back in August, more than two months before the election, Kaepernick called Trump “openly racist.” Trump’s response: “I have followed [Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the anthem] and I think it’s personally not a good thing, I think it’s a terrible thing. And maybe he should find a country that works better for him, let him try. It won’t happen.” While Kaepernick waits for his next NFL opportunity, he is busy raising money to fly food and water to people in Somalia. Colin Kaepernick Helps Secure Plane, Raise Nearly $1.8M In 2 Days to Help Somalia Drought Victims. Colin Kaepernick proved his philanthropy spans the globe by announcing Turkish Airlines will provide a plane to send hunger relief supplies to Somalia. “Amazing news: Turkish Airlines granted us an airplane to fly to Somalia, a 60-ton cargo plane so we can fly there with food, with water for these people,” Kaepernick says. “Now, we’ve started a GoFundMe page to allow anyone to help us donate food, donate water. We’ll make sure every cent goes to help these people.” The free-agent quarterback is one of many celebrities who came together to push the Twitter campaign #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia that spurred a $2 million GoFundMe fundraiser forward. The “Love Army for Somalia” campaign was created in part by Internet stars including YouTube’s Casey Neistat and Snapchat’s Jérôme Jarre, who confirmed Turkish Airlines promised to send Somalia staples like rice, porridge.
