In their first form of public protest, some Patriots kneel while Tom Brady and others lock arms. SCREW YOU BRADY FOR NOT TAKING A KNEE!!! More than a dozen Patriots players either kneeled or locked arms in solidarity during the national anthem before Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. It was the Patriots’ first form of public protest. Sixteen Patriots kneeled, all of whom are black. Tom Brady was among many, including the New England offensive line, who locked arms with teammates.
The entire Texans also sideline stood in a long line, locking arms. None of them kneeled. Seconds before the national anthem commenced, boos rang out inside Gillette Stadium. Once the anthem concluded, fans booed again. All of this comes in response to rising tensions around the league after President Donald Trump’s recent comments. He lashed out at protesting players during a speech in Alabama on Friday night. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now,’ ” Trump said. “He is fired. He’s fired!’” Trump’s comments prefaced a series of tweets conveying the same message. He encouraged fans to boycott the sport until further action is taken against the protesting players, lighting a fire that spread throughout the league. Entering Sunday, more than a dozen NFL owners issued statements condemning Trump’s message. About four hours before the Patriots took the field on Sunday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, one of the league’s most prominent Trump supporters, joined in. Safety Devin McCourty has been one of the most outspoken Patriots on topics pertaining to social issues. One day after the Patriots won Super Bowl LI, in a text message to TIME, McCourty declared he wouldn’t go to the White House because of the president’s “opinions and prejudices.”
