SNL Season 43: Alec Baldwin returns as Donald Trump (Video). Saturday Night Live returned tonight with a much-needed trolling of all the things that went on over the summer.
Just like Gotham City needed Batman, America needed Saturday Night Live back in its life. Thanks to Donald Trump and the pushback that SNL’s audience desires, the series elevated itself to new heights and served as a vessel for those outraged by what was going on in Washington.
Things got so bad that The Weekend Update was turned into a primetime television series over the summer just to make sure we didn’t all lose our minds. The series returned this weekend and it couldn’t have come at a better time.It wasn’t a matter of if but what the series would use in its first cold open of the season to attack the Trump administration.
Right off the bat, SNL went hard in the paint over Trump’s response to the Puerto Rico relief efforts. There were also digs at the people he’s fired, his war on the NFL and the possibility that he has a brain disease.Twitter Ads info and privacy
Alec Baldwin won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Comedy — something that is almost unheard of for a Saturday Night Live regular let alone a guest actor. We’ll likely be seeing much more of him throughout the season, but there’s plenty to like among the cast members not playing Trump.
Beck Bennett has pulled double duty in playing Vice President Mike Pence as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kate McKinnon won fans over with her hilarious Jeff Sessions impression, while Mikey Day did an underrated job as Steve Bannon. There’s plenty of shoes to fill, from Sarah Huckabee Sanders to whoever else is left and hasn’t been fired (it’s a little hard to keep a running count at this point).Melissa McCarthy won an Emmy for her guest role as Sean Spicer, which means guest actors will be lining up to try and get their hands on a Trump role which could pay off in awards gold. The real winners are those waiting for something to laugh at in a political era where it seems outrage is currency and relief never seems to find its way to our sanity.
