Joe Biden’s testy response to NBC question about Hunter’s dealings in Ukraine
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden bristled when he was asked during an interview about his son Hunter’s work for a Ukrainian energy company that is at the heart of the Senate impeachment trial against President Trump.
The former vice president was asked by Savannah Guthrie during an interview on NBC’s “Today” show about the “irony” surrounding Trump’s allegations against Hunter and the claims being amplified during the impeachment proceedings.
“It’s a good thing that no one’s found anything wrong with his dealing with Ukraine except they say it sets a bad image,” Biden said in the interview broadcast Monday.
Guthrie then asked if it was “wrong” for Hunter to take a seat on the board of Burisma Holdings “because the company wanted access to you.”
“That’s not true. You’re saying things you do not know what you’re talking about,” Biden said. “No one has said that — who said that?”
The NBC anchor said some people would see it as “sleazy” and asked “was it right?”
“Well, he said he regretted having done it. Speak for yourself. He’s a grown man,” Biden said.
Trump and Republicans allege that Biden — then the Obama administration’s pointman in Ukraine — threatened to hold up $1 billion in loan guarantees to Ukraine unless it fired a top prosecutor while Hunter worked for Burisma.Biden has said the prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, was not aggressive enough in fighting corruption and it was a foreign policy decision backed by a number of European countries to have him removed.
In a phone call in July, Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to announce an investigation into the Bidens.
Democrats claim Trump held up nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine to pressure Zelensky.
The House impeached Trump in December on two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Trump’s trial in the GOP-controlled Senate is expected to end in acquittal on Wednesday, after a vote to call more witnesses was defeated 51-49 last Friday.
