Bernie Sanders campaign event in Carson City disrupted by anti-dairy industry protesters
A Bernie Sanders campaign rally in Carson City Sunday was interrupted briefly by a group of anti-dairy industry protesters.
Following an introduction from Mayor of New York City Bill DeBlasio, Senator Sanders didn't get far in his speech before Priya Sawhney, a Direct Action Anywhere leader, appeared beside him at the podium and tried to steal his microphone.
“Bernie, I’m your biggest supporter, and I’m asking you stop propping up the dairy industry,” Sawhney said while Sanders tried to cover the extra microphone she had taken from the podium. The sound was quickly cut, and Sanders exited the stage while his staff got the situation under control. Three other women with Direct Action Anywhere, an animal liberation activist group, took to the stage topless with “Let Dairy Die” written across their chests and poured “fake blood” over themselves from milk cartons. Others circled behind the stage carrying a banner with “Let Dairy Die” across it.
After their removal, the Sanders rally continued smoothly.
Direct Action Anywhere issued a press release about the incident claiming the three women were arrested for indecent exposure.“If Bernie truly cares about justice, he will stop propping up the dairy industry, which relies on the abuse of female cows,” said Sawhney in the release. “I love Bernie, but we must hold abusive industries accountable, not shield and subsidize them. Animal farming is an industry which gives welfare payments to millionaires.”
The group says that the dairy industry “remains notably absent from [Sanders’] condemnation.”
One self-described Sanders supporter at the event wrote on Twitter about the incident, saying “I’m okay with this,” adding, “I’m glad those women felt safe enough at a Bernie rally to express themselves unclothed. We create safe spaces in this movement.”
