Biden Backtracks on Comments Comparing Black, Hispanic Communities
JOE BIDEN HAS WALKED back a comment suggesting that the African American community is not "diverse," cleaning up the awkward remark he made to minority journalists when discussing Hispanic and Black voters.
In a virtual interview Thursday morning, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said that "unlike the African-American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community." President Donald Trump jumped on the remarks later in the day, saying Biden "totally disparaged and insulted the black community. What he said is incredible. … It was a very insulting statement he made."
Biden, who has frequently stepped on his own message with gaffes and inartful phrasing, came back with a clarification Thursday night for the remarks he made to reporters from the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
"Earlier today, I made some comments about diversity in the African American and Latino communities that I want to clarify. In no way did I mean to suggest the African American community is a monolith – not by identity, not on issues, not at all," Biden said on Twitter.
"Throughout my career I've witnessed the diversity of thought, background, and sentiment within the African American community. It's this diversity that makes our workplaces, communities, and country a better place," he said.
