In this intense philosophical and political debate, we tackle a fundamental question about rights, government, and society:
Is welfare a human right?
Millennial Mike argues the negative: Welfare is not a human right. True human rights are universal, inherent, and non-contradictory. Declaring welfare a right requires forcing others (taxpayers, farmers, builders, landlords) to provide goods and services, which equates to coercion and violates the life, liberty, and property of those forced to pay or participate. He supports safety nets as policy but rejects them as “rights” because they infringe on others.
Mr. Beans takes the affirmative: Welfare (at minimum food and shelter) is a human right stemming from the social contract with government. Citizens participate in and pay into society their entire lives, so government has a duty to ensure basic needs are met. Governments can generate revenue independently and the “general welfare” clause supports this without directly forcing private individuals.
