DEBATE: “Ought the United States comply with international law?” + OPEN PANEL GAUNTLET 🔥

Ryan Mullally vs Whick — moderated by Sara (The Raging Tomato)

In this high-stakes geopolitical debate, we tackle a critical question for American foreign policy:

Ought the United States comply with international law?

Whick argues the affirmative: The US should comply with international law (treaties, conventions, norms like the Geneva Conventions, WTO, and post-WWII order) because it reduces global conflict, maintains economic stability, builds legitimacy, and strengthens long-term US power against rivals like China and Russia. Abandoning the rules-based system risks chaos, as seen before WWII.

Ryan Mullally takes the negative: There is no moral or binding “ought” for the US to comply. International law is a tool the US uses when it serves its national interest — great powers self-regulate, and the US has historically ignored rulings (ICJ, WTO disputes, ICC) when inconvenient. Sovereignty and pragmatic self-interest come first.

Expect sharp arguments on:

Sovereignty vs. rules-based international order

Enforcement, UN Security Council veto power, and great power exceptions

Historical examples (WWII, Iraq, tariffs, Guantanamo, Paris Accord)

Benefits of compliance vs. “Pax Americana” and national interest

Legitimacy, soft power, and realpolitik

The first ~2 hours feature a structured debate with openings, rebuttals, and closings. Then we switch to full OPEN PANEL GAUNTLET mode — audience members jump in, challenge both sides, drop superchats, and turn it into an intellectual free-for-all.

Who won the debate? You decide.

LIVE every Monday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday night at 9:15 PM EST!
