In deep seas, it spreads outward; in the shallows, it rises and piles upon itself. During the Ice Age, when continental shelves stretched far from today’s shorelines, such waves could have swept inland for dozens of miles.

Any coastal civilization living then would have been erased completely, their cities buried beneath the returning sea.
