Most oxygen in nature is oxygen-16, but a heavier form, oxygen-18, also exists. These isotopes move through ocean water differently and become locked into the shells of marine organisms as they form.
By measuring the ratio of oxygen-16 to oxygen-18 preserved in fossil shells, scientists can track changes in ocean temperature, ice volume, and global climate stretching back hundreds of thousands of years.
