However, Randall was, and without him the entire interdisciplinary overlap now emerging might not exist. But recognizing Earth's history of catastrophic events isn't permission to abdicate responsibility for the damage being done today. We didn't cause the ancient catastrophes, but that fact can't be used as cover for ignoring what's happening now. The reality of past events demands better preparation, not less accountability.
