As somebody who's built a lot of things and moved heavy weights, Randall finds the idea perplexing. What's the motive for a project this enormous? Moving a 20-ton block of stone is challenging even today with modern equipment - doing it by hand would be an enormous undertaking. But here's the fundamental problem: when are they having time to hunt and gather when engaged in construction on this scale? Hunter-gatherer subsistence requires constant attention to food acquisition. Megalithic construction requires massive labor investment over extended periods. These two demands on time and energy seem incompatible unless the society was more complex and settled than the "hunter-gatherer" label suggests, or the climate was less demanding than currently assumed.
