When the ancient ice sheets receded, they left behind massive blocks of dead glacial ice embedded in till - the pulverized material ground up beneath the glacier as it moved across the land. Over time, those ice blocks melted, and the earth above them collapsed inward, leaving the distinctive depressions we now call kettle lakes.
Sitting within terminal moraine, the boundary marking how far a glacier advanced, these lakes are essentially frozen moments in geological time. They don't just record the ice age. In a very real sense, they proved it existed.
